Learn More About Saving & Investing for Retirement

No matter which retirement plan you are in, MPSERS or ORP, by contributing additional monies from your check to a tax-deferred investment, you are increasing the amount you will have so you can retire when you are ready.  It is important to start saving as soon as possible so your contributions can grow and compound over time.   All supplemental retirement monies are deducted on a pre-tax basis, so not only are you saving more for the future, but you are also saving on your taxes by lowering your taxable income. 
 
It is important that you understand some of the options available to you:

Workshops:

  • CMU has retirement education workshops every spring and fall for all employees.  Both TIAA-CREF and Fidelity Investments send a representative to do presentations about saving for retirement and investing your retirement monies.  Announcements about upcoming workshops will be distributed via email and our Website at: http://www.hrs.cmich.edu/announcements.htm
  • Individual Consulting Opportunities:
  • TIAA-CREF is on campus each month to do individual consulting sessions. Go to their website at: www.tiaa-cref.org/moc, then click on meetings and counseling.  You fill in the state and then go under Central Michigan University.  You can sign up directly with them or call their toll free number at: 1-866-842-2825, ext # 6601.
  • Fidelity is on campus two times a year to do individual consulting sessions.  These dates and times will be on our website at the time of the retirement workshop week.  You will be able to call their toll free number to register for a meeting. Announcements about future Fidelity visits will be distributed via email and our Website at: http://www.hrs.cmich.edu/announcements.htm

Online Resources/Tools

Both TIAA-CREF and Fidelity offer various online tools and helpful information about retirement planning and investing.  You can also log into your own account to get your updated account balances.
