Open Workshop Descriptions

5 Dysfunctions of a Team Based on the best selling book by Patrick Lencioni.  In his book, Lencioni reviews the five dysfunctions that prevent most organizations from optimally performing: absence of trust, fear of conflict, inability to commit, lack of accountability, and inattention to results.  Participants will explore how to apply strategies to overcome the challenges teams encounter.
7 Habits of Highly Effective People This intensive, two-day workshop provides participants with a robust and tactical implementation plan to fully integrate the 7 Habits into their lives.  It is designed for anyone looking to become a more effective person - regardless of your occupation, position, or stage in life.  You'll learn how to improve focus, communication, and balance for yourself and your organization; how to develop professional relationships for productive collaboration; the importance of responsibility, accountability, and commitment; skills for increasing productivity by staying focused on the right things; and how to reduce conflict by understanding exactly what you can influence.  Cost is $105 and covers lunch on both days and Franklin Covey workbook.
Body Talk How can you tell if a person is lying?  How do you know if someone is interested in asking you out? What is a sign of confidence and self-assuredness? This program will teach you how to read another's body language like a book. Understand non-verbal behavior and learn how to listen with your eyes!
Coaching For Improved Work Performance Learn the art of coaching and reap the benefits of increased employee productivity and satisfaction. Whether you need to coach someone to improve performance or for professional development, the same principles apply. You will discover that coaching is the best way to earn respect, build trust and help others succeed!
Coalition Building Workshop The workshops are an opportunity to identify and work through stereotypes, to hear about the personal effects of discrimination, and to learn ways of intervening when confronted with inappropriate behaviors. For more information or to register contact the Multicultural Education Center at 7318.
Core Values This session provides knowledge and insight on the widely held principles that guide and motivate CMU thus bringing better understanding and awareness for people involved with the university.
Difficult Conversations We’ve all been there.  We need to talk, but we would rather not!  Whether it’s about performance, discipline, emotions, or the neighbor’s dog, the struggle of what to say and how to say it weighs heavy.  Utilizing principles and ideas from a variety of resources, we will look at the dynamics of what is involved in this kind of conversation, and explore practical ways to make them less stressful and more productive.
Effective Meetings Spend too much time in meetings? Many of us do. Learn techniques to increase buy-in, participation, and commitment.  Be a meeting leader who uses meetings to get things done, make decisions, build morale, and communicate pertinent information.  Participants will review how to bring more structure and direction to their meetings, while keeping them interactive and positive.
Employee Engagement Surveys What we have known all along has now been quantified by solid research:  a happy employee is a productive employee.  Employee morale impacts absenteeism, turnover, productivity, and virtually every business measure imaginable.  This one hour workshop is designed to introduce you to the key factors that impact employee engagement, and how you can use a simple survey in your units to improve employee satisfaction.
Find Success through Mentoring Join us for this interactive program about mentoring staff at CMU.  A mentor is a wise and trusted counselor, a role model, a guide, a tutor, a coach and someone who can guide your career.  Learn how to cultivate informal mentoring relationships through discussing shared values, interests, hobbies or mutual respect for one another.  Discover the benefits of an informal mentoring program and how you can go about building a mentoring relationship.
FISH This seminar focuses on creating a motivational environment and service orientated culture in your organization. It also features a video on the Fish Philosophy.

Sign up for FOCUS, a new time management and life leadership workshop from Franklin Covey that helps you improve your job performance and maintain a healthy balance in all facets of your life.
From the Inside Out Key to success at work and home begins inside each of us. Research shows a significant link between positive self-concept and satisfaction with work and life.  This session will review the critical factors necessary to build a positive self-concept.
Humor in the Workplace Ever have fun at work?  Do you know why having fun is important?  Understand this and other important tips for having fun in the workplace.  Understand the appropriateness of using healing, rather than harmful, humor in your job.  Leave with concrete ideas and a complete list of resources for making work fun!
