Workstation/Office Setup Tips

What is Ergonomics?

Ergonomics is the science of fitting the job to the worker. It involves fitting the workplace conditions and job demands (both physical and mental) to the capabilities of the person performing the work. By providing a better fitting work environment, an employer can expect higher productivity, avoidance of illness and injury risk, and increased job satisfaction among its workers.

Central Michigan University has implemented an ergonomics program to focus on the prevention and management of work-related disorders associated with repetitious job duties.

C.H.I.P. Facility Ergonomic Evaluations

In an effort to provide the safest and most comfortable work environment for all employees, the C.H.I.P. Facility offers preventative programs and services.

Workstation Ergonomic Evaluation

Bill Weaver will come to your workstation to evaluate and recommend ergonomic changes to help to prevent daily work related stresses and strains associated with improperly adjusted furniture/equipment, poor office layout/design or other physical factors affecting performance.

To request an Ergonomic Evaluation:

  • The department supervisor/manager/director/chair must submit an Ergonomic Evaluation Request form. The completed form can be emailed to Bill Weaver, Fax 774-2177, or send printed request form to Bill Weaver at the C.H.I.P. Facility
  • Bill Weaver will contact the person(s) identified on the request form to schedule the evaluation(s).
  • The evaluation process involves looking at workstation setup, observing the employee while they work and addressing concerns or problems that exist. Any adjustments that can be made easily will be made on site. Mr. Weaver will also discuss ways the employee can improve work habits and posture to help alleviate discomfort or stress.
  • A report will be sent to the department supervisor/manager/director/chair for review prior to sending a copy to the employee. The report will include the primary problems identified; adjustments made on site, suggestions made to the employee and suggestions for the department.

New Office Equipment Adjustment Services:

C.H.I.P. staff are available to assist any office on campus with adjusting new chairs or other workstation furniture. Offices needing assistance should phone Bill Weaver at 1663.
